the metal vocal tutorial
.mp3 | 4:17 | 3.92MB
The Metal Vocal Tutorial was originally recorded in 2003 for a small group of people on the Godcore.com forums. Since then it has gained ground all over the internet, and is downloaded more than a hundred times each month.
While I’d love to help everyone, I don’t know the answers to everything. I’m not a pro, just a guy who’s been in a metal band or two trying to help others.
Please don’t ask me how to sound like “_____” from “______.” I don’t know. There are many different ways to scream, this is how I learned. I’d encourage you to ask Vocalist X from Band Y how he/she does it, and let the rest of us know.
I mentioned Melissa Cross’s “Zen of Screaming” in the tutorial. You can find it here.

By Jansen on 06.23.06 9:01pm
You’re tutorial helped me much, thank you! I’ve gotten this from a forum on the internet in a topic about harsh vocals, but I do have a question: how do you perform long growls? if you just sigh, all your breath will come out much too fast?
By Lody on 07.20.06 7:09pm
Hey man, nice tutorial, I’m 16 years old, a Metal Freak, and I think I know how to do it properly, but I lost my links to some samples I’d like you to check out and give your oppinnion on… I’ll try to find them, and when I do, I’ll send them to you, I’d like to know what you think
By Kevin on 07.26.06 8:37am
Hi! Great tutorial dude!
By Derrick221 on 07.29.06 1:55pm
Thanks, Tony.
This MP3 file helped me to make sure, that the way I scream won’t make me lose my voice.
When I asked my brother how it sounds in his ears he said that my scream is thick. He didn’t say if it was a possitive fact or a negative one. But thanks to that MP3 I am now sure. Thanks again.

By Severick on 12.07.06 2:42am
ok its me again, i got a few more questions for you. i talked to a guy who used to be in a hard core band today. first of all, what is falsetto screaming and voiceboxing? also my screams have been hurting my throat and im breathing with my diaphram/stomach. is this becuz my muscles arnt strong enough yet or am i doing something wrong?
By austin on 12.11.06 10:39pm
yay! finnally finnally, of practicing an hour ever night for a while, got the deep metal scream, like off ur mp3. cant do high yet though. but my throat still hurts a little even when i go deep, not as much as it used too. is the pain only a temporary thing, or should i be worried about vocal damage. right now my voice is completly gone cuz ive been trying high screaming, and im not gettin anywhere with that.
By austin on 12.12.06 9:51pm
Ur tutorial is awesome dude! My grunt has improved soooo much. It didn’t work as it suposed to first (I just simply screamed(though my scream sounds like a grunt naturally already))So, when are yo supposed to start it? some say u have to be at least 16 yrs old before u should do it, but im 13 and already have a quite mature voice so….
By SSSKSHM! on 12.15.06 11:09am

but your tutorial is gonna help a lot
Thanks!
By the_normanator on 01.11.07 2:04pm
hey, great tutorial, thanks alot. Just a few questions if you dont mind.
1) I use my diagrahm to breathe yet my throat still hurts? Am I doing something wrong? Im also confused to wether you blow out with your diagrahm and sort of ‘emulate’ the sound with the throat.
2) Is this the same tech. used for pig squels / grunts / reet reet! lol
Thanks for your time!
By Rufio on 01.14.07 11:12am
your mp3 is awesome but i have a few questions. whenever i scream i do great for about three minutes, and then when i try again the raspyness is almost lost and i just goes flat out talking voice almost. will this improve with practice or am i doing it wrong?
By Nico on 01.18.07 3:08am
Hey Tony! your tutorial is AWESOME i can now get very low but to scream high but i got to practice more! ROCK ON \m/
By Japsâh on 01.23.07 5:43am

hey im getting the hang of the screaming except whenever im about to do it my voice isnt strong enough to do it, i dont know if its coz of my voice change through puberty or what?
By Tyler on 04.26.07 3:05am
I have been in a metal band for about two years now. I do both high and low vocals and it wasnt until recently i have been having some trouble.I too use the sigh method, but when I do lows I of course use the round mouth tech, but I try to keep some fluid between my tounge and throat. But recently I got sick, and was having a bit of trouble with my lows before, Being sick didnt help, I could breathe correctly and my vocal were shoty. I had to do an important show while sick and the strained my vocals. I gave them a rest and everything was good again. Shortly after we did a show and the pa was awful, so i found my self getting louder so i could hear myself, after the show my throat felt very bad, like i had a lump or something, soon after I got sick again, mostly chest congestion, but this affected my breathing, I aso coughed ALOT and still have the cough. I am having trouble doing my vocals, i cant seem to keep my throat moist enough and im getting this air type breaking thing in my vocals, espcially the lows. Im starting having trouble with highs, which i shouldnt. Im not sure if its just because ive been so out of itcan coughing effect my vocals?, or if its more serious than that. Any advice or help would be great, thank you.

By blaah on 06.02.07 2:14am
Hey there, awesome tutorial.
I was just wondering: this is the first time I try to scream. Is it supposed to hurt just a little (not much, slight sore throat that goes away in a no more than a day)? I just keep seeing everywhere I go, “If it hurts, stop,” so I was just wondering how much it has to hurt before you need to stop.
Note: I’ve never had any vocal training, so I don’t really have any formal vocal experience.
By Gerard on 06.08.07 7:25am
Hey man, your tutorial is really awesome, I can now get really low growls. But, it still hurts my throat quite a bit when I do it. Any tips?
By Norm on 06.18.07 7:36pm

By Benjo on 06.28.07 3:36pm
Your tute is awesome, i listened to your old ones too, but this one is better. Like everyone i have a question: how can i scream high ( like a girl )
By bojan on 07.01.07 8:43am
My god. I’ve been in a band for some time (well, we’ve disbanded recently, but three of the old five-piece ensemble still carries on) and my vocals there has been, I don’t know, bad… It sounded a bit like Jens Kidman from Meshuggah but a lot worse and amateur-like. Your, like 5 minutes of teaching have totally changed that. I got it allmost directly, no joking!
I will practice it daily from now on, to get it down perfectly. You are god man!
By Edvin on 09.08.07 1:38pm
Bahaha, I’ve been screaming for about two years and I have got to say this is the best (and the most hilarious) tutorial I’ve ever used. At the time, I cannot practice it but I’m sure it will help a ton. Thank you sir for sharing your technique and knowledge to all fledgling vocalists awide.

I can get rather low and I can’t ge thigh, even with the technique you described above….so I know it seems like cheating but anyway to fake the higher tones with out doing damage?

By Jeff on 02.22.08 3:42pm
This tutorial was recorded in the fall of 2003. If you’ll look, the kid who posted the identical tutorial has actually linked to my site.
By tonybullard on 02.22.08 4:37pm

By alex on 03.18.08 5:38pm
I listened to the original when I first started out wanting to learn how to scream, and it has helped me majorly and I’ve found many different styles I can use just by using the techniques in here as a basis. Thanks alot for making this!
By Jacob on 03.22.08 11:23am
nice dude, i could get pretty low before but couldn’t do high to well or get a lot of volume but im getting better, very useful.
By danny on 03.27.08 2:06pm
Ahoi, Matrosen!
I just got another little question… My growling (the high as well as the low) sound very good when I practice at home, but as soon as I am reheasing with my band, I can’t get out a single well sounding sound. I think it’s because of our volume… we are pretty loud and at home I never practise sooo loud… How loud are your growls? Or are my vocal cords the problem?
By Mr. FreeZe on 03.31.08 3:35am
hey tony I listened to the old tutorial about a year ago and you have been the greatest help to me. I can growl and scream so well now so I wanted to thank you for that. I do hav one question however which isn’t basic. I’ve got your technique down pretty well but here’s the thing, when I scream high, I tend to push harder. now is this what you’re supposed to do or are you just supposed to go higher in the throat as you growl/scream with a normal amount of air? it’s a much different sound. so I can’t decide which one is better for you vocally meaning sound and health. I’d really appreciate it if you got back with me on that subject, Thanx.
By AJ on 04.01.08 1:38am
Cheers m8, Great instructions and everything. Big creds! Told all my friends about your guide
By Millen on 04.09.08 1:54pm
I’ve practised my low growls for a while, whithout having any clue of making the high, black metal ones. But you really gave a good explaination of it, thanks mate!
By the way, get a band

By sheldon on 04.30.08 7:44pm
Haha, not only is it very helpful, but also funny, the black metal comment that is.
Good job, really.
By DerfelCadarn on 05.01.08 9:38am
thats pretty badass that your teaching people the art of screaming. personally i love bands that scream thats really all im into. and as well i am the vocalist for my band..it took me a while to learn, but to me it was different, i listened to bands ranging from devil wears prada, as i lay dying, aborted, heaven shall burn and others such as dimmu borgir and that helped me a lot…i guess others learn differently, but everyone has their own badass scream….keep rockin..and keep it metal
By Alex Camacho on 05.06.08 12:07pm
This technique seems to be very great. You do not hurt your throat in any ways which means you won’t loose your “normal” singing voice. Big up Tony! Thank you.

By Jasmine on 09.13.08 5:35pm
Hey dude, I always thought that I would do the growling wrong, but when I listened to your mp3 I noticed that there’s someone who says it’s right. You also showed me how to practice my diaphragm, and now I’m self-confident enough to practice the growling my way. Thank you very much!

Just for the record… the diaphragm isn’t at all used for pushing out air, it’s a muscle that’s used for pulling air in, and maybe while doing nr.2… While singing you use the muscles around your waist, so thats what you’re training, the tecnique should be working thou, so whatever muscle it is, it doesn’t matter… Thanx alot for an apreciated tutorial!
By Petter on 12.16.08 6:06pm
oh…. yeah… forgot something… when you breath out like usual… what you do is relaxing the diaphragm, that hs the result of “releasing” the air, thou when you need tho “push” you use other muscles, not doing that is often the reason that you wear out you voice…
By Petter on 12.16.08 6:09pm
that really helped me about the whole technequie of screaming, cheers for the tips !!!

awesome dude! huge thanks
By mati on 02.06.09 11:47am
Really useful, makes more sense than other tutorials by relating it to something you would do normally, other tutorials go on about ‘doing it from your diaphragm not your throat’ which leaves me confused, thinking ‘how do you tell?’, but the way you explain it makes much more sense.
PS. That Black metal bit, ‘Puddles of darkness and evil’ always makes me laugh for some reason
By R B on 03.02.09 12:32pm
U are god!! xD
It was really useful, and with a sense of humor too ^^

At first, thank you so f***ing much, I spend hours trying to find something useful to learn this. After the Metal Festival at the Weekend my voice was destroyed. Now I tryed your technique just one time and it feels way better, thank you very, very much.

Hey dude thanks for the tips but does smoking effect my voice at all? It’s made my voice deeper but will it degrade my ability to keep a note?

Hey Tony, thanks a lot for making this mate. You may not be anyone special, but you know what you’re talking about, and you’ve definitely helped me to improve my vocals. I thought they were pretty good before, but after practising more with your technique my band has been really impressed and our tone has gotten a lot better.
Thanks man, and congratulations on the new baby too!

I DON’t Know why but just as mom is my God of my life, Tony is the God of my music intrest. YOU are one of the best persons, because I saw lots of rockstars and experts but none of them share their ability because they are scared that someone might do it better than them. .but Sir Tony here you did a great job!! U are a true Rockstar indeed
By Punkaz sharma on 10.21.11 4:54am

You used to have the 2003 version of the tutorial on your site, and I kind of prefer it (had a good example, and funny when you say “blah blah blah” lol)! Are you able to put it back online? I can’t find it anywhere… Cheers!
By Adam on 04.07.12 5:26am
