cars

Noah is completely and totally obsessed with cars. There is no way I will be able to express to you just how much he loves cars. It consumes him fully.

This morning, at 7am, Noah began to move around in bed, slight whimpers letting me know he’s about to wake up. I open the door quietly, move to his crib, but hes yet to realize I’m there. I hear his breathe quicken as he wakes up, and he says to himself, “a car.”

Once out in the living room, the first thing he does is find a toy jeep, run up to me, and say, “a caaar.” He says car, and most of his words, with his voice trailing upwards as he finishes the word. You would almost think it was a question if he didn’t say it with such confidence, eyes set on the tiny automobile in his hands.

When we drive he points them out. When we’re in a parking lot it’s like he has Tourettes. His current favorite book is “Go, Dog. Go!” I realized he loves it because it’s main subject is all his favorite words. Dogs, cars, bikes, and while he never says it, he loves to motion to his head every time he sees a hat. It’s almost like someone wrote a book especially for him. It gets read about three times a day on average.

As we prepared for bed tonight, we read through it again, and once finished I asked him to point out things on his alphabet poster. I ask for the Alligator, he points to the toy alligator under the A. He’s almost got the whole poster down. But tonight he wasn’t very cooperative. He kept standing in front of his numbers poster, pointing to the 5 cars under the 5, and repeating, “car…caaaarr.” He brought Go, Dog. Go! to me again, and repeated the word over and over. He opened the book to a picture of a dog in a car, and just repeated, “A car. A car. A car.” He then broke down into engine noises and “drove” his toy car up and down his leg.

Bed time came, and as I laid him down he began to fuss and cry. “Mommy! Moooommmmyyy! Moooommmmy!!! Car!”

a few notes on saturday morning tv

Thomas and Friends:
There’s an event in town, and all the kids are waiting for it. One train is assigned to carry the load of puppets, fireworks, ice cream, etc. Another train is jealous. Jealous train acts like a jerk and ends up wrecking. Jealous train learns lesson. The end.

You’ve now seen every episode of Thomas and friends. Congrats.

Sesame Street:
Teresa told me about this, but today I saw it with my own eyes. Theme song starts, Noah gets up to dance. He starts yelling, “Bike! Bike!” Just then, Elmo appears on a bike. Few seconds pass and he starts yelling “Car! Car!” Just then, the Grouch appears in a cab. Then it’s “Ball! Ball!” and a boy appears bouncing a ball. Noah has memorized the opening sequence of Sesame Street. he claps along with ll the kids on TV when it ends. Then he sits in his chair, and smiles for the next hour.

Not sure if this is cute, or a bad sign.

fun to be had

Another installment of the rare quote post. Once again from the beautiful Teresa:

Next time you want to have fun with Noah … Well, at Noah’s expense …

Sidenote: Am I crazy, or does Q come way to early in the alphabet? It seems more like one of those “after T” letters.
Sidenote 2: I’ve always hated S because it comes before T (the first letter of my name), like it’s all special or something. I’ve also always considered R to be the force that keeps them from fighting about it too much.

new song

So Teresa’s Birthday just passed on the 15th, and with her out of town the week before, I figured I had a good chance to write her a song in secret. Procrastination and lack of singing ability ended up making the whole process very very stressful and hurried. But she likes it, and that’s all that matters.

a sad day for metal

Drummer Louie Bellson died on Valentine’s Day. He was made famous drumming and composing for Duke Ellington. The reason it’s a sad day for metal is that Bellson pioneered the double-bass drum setup. He came up with it in high school at the age of 14. He grew up to play stuff like this:

That double bass idea gave way to stuff like this:

Thanks Louie. Rest In Peace.

Ah spam. Sometimes automated mail can send you some interesting information. For instance:

For those of you who don’t get it, you should read this post. It’ll make sense pretty quick.

this arbitrary time period in noah

I’ve complained many times to friends about how we sometimes take as many as 300 pictures of Noah each MONTH. There are times when I will find 40 or 50 pictures of Noah from one session on a swing. I have to wade through hundreds of pictures of Noah’s face getting progressively more covered in food, using any excuse to delete some to free up every decreasing hard drive space. Oh look, one eye is half closed, delete. This one is completely out of focus, delete. All the while Teresa is over my shoulder, “But you never know, we might want that one of Noah’s blurry hand covering the entire lens!”

A few times we wondered how it will turn out with our (assumed) second child. It’s common knowledge that the first baby always get the nicest baby book, and personal knowledge that by the third child, me, my parents didn’t even bother remembering my first word.

But since Teresa and I are so forward thinking, we’ve jumped ahead and started neglecting Noah. Not in the conventional sense mind you, but in a more comparative one. For most people it wouldn’t be a big deal, but to go from 271 photos of Noah in his 9th month, to a total of 2 in his 19th month, well, let’s just say it doesn’t look pretty for his future if you put it on a graph.

Think about that for a moment. 271 pictures of one person in one month. That’s 9 photos a day. I you assume you’re awake for 16 hours out of the day, that’s almost a photo every 2 hours. Are we parents, or stalkers?

Well, no need to worry any more. The two pictures of Noah in his 19th month document him noticing the cat on a shelf. One day we’ll look back and wonder what happened in that month. Did his life just come to a stand still? Was he just really boring that month? Have we lost interest in our son? First it’s 2 pictures a month, next it’s me skipping baseball games for a late meeting, and before you know it, we’re an 80′s coming of age movie. I can’t imagine what I’ll say when he comes home with an ear ring. And a girl he made using science and a Barbie doll.

Anyways, enough of my rambling. Here’s some more video of Captain Adorable Pants.
